The RAF Long Service and Good Conduct Medal (LS&GCM) was instituted on 1 July 1919 to be awarded to NCOs and other ranks of the RAF for 18 years of exemplary service. From 1944 bars were awarded for further periods of qualifying service. From 1944, periods of service in the Army or Navy up to four years could be counted towards the award. From 1947 officers were able to receive the award provided they had served in the ranks for at least 12 years.
